ASSESSING THE ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY OF CROPPING SYSTEMS IN WEST AFRICA: THE CASE OF THE KAYA HYDRO- AGRICULTURAL SCHEME IN SANMATENGA PROVINCE

Résumé

In West Africa, water is considered an essential commodity for agricultural activities. This is more than necessary during the dry season, hence the construction of hydro-agricultural structures to store large quantities of water for a variety of purposes. This study specifically employs the Farm Sustainability Indicators method (IDEA, 2023) to rigorously examine the hypothesis that the sustainability principles are not adequately aligned with the cropping systems implemented within the Kaya hydro-agricultural perimeter, particularly concerning their economic sustainability. The objective of this research is to determine the sustainability of cropping systems that have been developed in the Kaya hydro-agricultural perimeter on the economic sustainability scale. The sample size is determined according to the probabilistic theory of C Schwartz (1995). A total of 91 individuals participated in the survey. The findings of the study indicated that the developed cropping systems achieved a sustainability score of 45 out of 100 points, corresponding to an average attainment of 28.59% of the maximum potential. The descriptive characteristics of the components show a standard deviation of 5.35 and a coefficient of variation of 0.18. This indicates that the descriptive characteristics exhibit a lack of sufficient concentration around the mean. The estimates of the various components and their respective indicators reveal that the highest observed value of maximum potential is 45, whereas the lowest observed value is 8.
